Another light week – a mere $11 million for diseases that are not ME.
Cort Johnson reported that NIH is preparing two RFAs, one for collaborative research centers and one for a Data Management Coordinating Center. Marian Emr told me, “The RFAs are working their way through the NIH process, with many people and ICs involved, so it difficult to predict the timing. We will certainly keep the community posted, however, as this is important to all of us.”
Obviously, neither of these replies indicate how big the RFAs will be or when we can expect to see them. I do still think there is a chance it could happen before September 30th, but that remains to be seen.
- Total RFAs Issued by NIH: 318 (October 2015 to date)
- Total Dollars Committed to RFAs: $2,676,235,617 (October 2015 to date)
- Total RFAs for ME/CFS: ZERO (October 2015 to date)

If you want more background on the RFA Ticker, read the inaugural post.
It’ll have to be massive if they’re going to make up for the neglect.
Sept. 30th, eh? Will be watching.
Thanks for staying on this.
I will be shocked if an RFA is granted for ME/CFS by Sept. 30, gladly shocked, but shocked nevertheless. And what will it be for?
Meanwhile, the University of California San Diego School of Medicine did a study showing chemical changes in metabolites for people with our disease; that is, metabolism is slowed down as it would be in hibernation or low caloric intake — in order to prevent cell death and save the organism. It’s very promising.
Has not been reported in the New York Times but has been around the blogosphere in science journals or ezines.
But no mention of RFAs for research projects. Very likely the NIH is sticking to its story that there are just not enough researchers out there to make RFAs for research worthwhile.
